Former Notable Players: Jose Canseco, Jason Giambi, Juan Marichal, Derek Lowe, Mark McGwire, Gaylord Perry, and Alex Rodriguez. Notes: The Tacoma Pierce County Baseball Park was built in a little over three months when Tacoma businessmen landed the San Francisco Giants Triple-A farm team. It named for benefactor, Ben Cheney, a lumber tycoon, who personally covered the cost overruns to ensure the stadium was ready for the 1960 season. To meet the Opening Day deadline the stadium was built from pre-stressed concrete forms while the light towers and grandstand seats were salvaged during the demolition of San Francisco’s Seals Stadium. On clear evenings Mount Rainier, about 45 miles eastward, is visible from the left field stands. A life-sized bronze statute of Cheney, with a program and peanuts at its feet, is seated in the grandstands. While the stadium has undergone multiple renovations and expansions over the years, for 2011 season the stadium was stripped down to the playing field and grandstand seating bowl during a $30 million renovation program. |
