Former Notable Players: Adrian Beltre, Sid Bream, Darrin Fletcher, Jose Offerman, Mike Piazza, and Steve Sax. Notes: Holman Stadium is the centerpiece of the fabled Dodgertown sprawling complex. Designed by famed architect Norman Bel Geddes, it was built in 90 days for the cost of $100,000. Trees lined the outfield and grandstands, but weather has taken its toll as a 1989 freeze claimed the outfield palms and the hurricanes of 2004 fell many of the shade trees. The stadium is named for local businessman, Bud L. Holman, who lobbied the then-Brooklyn Dodgers to establish a permanent facility in Vero Beach. It probably the only ballpark in professional baseball to have only benches rather than the traditional dugouts for both teams. The Los Angeles Dodgers relocated their Spring Training to Glendale, Arizona for 2009 ending a fifty-year presence at Vero Beach, while the FSL team moved to the newly-renovated facility near Port Charlotte. |
