Year Demolished: 1988 Former Notable Players: Johnny Bench, Steve Farr, Ferguson Jenkins, Cleon Jones, Hal McRae, and Tony Pena. Notes: This WPA project opened as Roesch Stadium, with its name later being changed to Grover Cleveland Stadium, and finally to Civic Stadium in 1960. It was the home of the both AAFC and AFL Buffalo Bills teams from 1947 until 1972. The first professional baseball team to call the stadium home would have to wait until 1960. Nicknamed the Rockpile, the inner city location caused the temporary relocation of the team's home games, several times, during the social unrest of the late 1960s and early 70s. While the stadium was demolished in 1988, its images will live forever in the 1984 movie, The Natural. War Memorial Stadium was the location for most of baseball scenes. The site has been rehabilitated into a community sports complex, with the stadium's grand entrances anchoring one end of the park. |
