Former Notable Players: Rollie Fingers, Burleigh Grimes, Reggie Jackson, Willie Mays, Satchel Paige and Willie Wells. Notes: The one-time home of the Birmingham Barons and the Negro League Birmingham Black Barons has emerged as a baseball must see. Identified by the National Park Service as the oldest park in the nation, Friends of Rickwood, have worked for a decade at restoring the facility, making it probably the only ballpark to be restored rather than renovated. The initial grandstands were built by industrialist Rick Woodward for his baseball team. Even though the Barons left Birmingham for the suburbs (Regions Park) in the late eighties, Rickwood Field still hosts about 200 baseball games a year for various city recreation, high school and college leagues. The marquee event is the Rickwood Classic where the Barons and a Southern League opponent don vintage uniforms for a late spring day game. The park was modeled after Pittsburgh's Forbes Field. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. |
