The stadium is one of the oldest actively used by
organized professional baseball. It has been expanded, contracted
and renovated multiple times to remain on par with other venues.
The grandstand, which had been damaged by Susquehanna River floods
several times, is now protected with flood walls as high as the
grandstands. It is named for J. Walton Bowman, the chief fundraiser
and major contributor, toward the construction of the field. The
first professional contest was a Negro League game. The first Little
League baseball game was played in 1939 where the outfield parking
is now located.
