Dunn Field is a historic stadium sitting next to the Chemung River in Elmira, New York.
Besides Bowman Field in Williamsport, it’s one of the only two remaining baseball fields from the great era of the Eastern League.
The ballpark opened in 1939 but baseball has been present on this site for well over a century.
Maple Avenue Driving Park was the first stadium on this location in the late 19th century. It was later replaced by Recreation Park whose wooden grandstands burned down in 1938.
A new stadium was constructed in its place and named after Edward Joseph Dunn, a local businessman on whose land the field was built.
This time, the ballpark was mostly made out of concrete and steel and has survived to this day, with one major renovation in 2012.
Today, the Dunn Field is a wonderful vintage ballpark, seating 4,020 people.
Since its opening, Dunn Field hosted various incarnations of the Elmira Pioneers baseball team. Pioneers spent 29 years in the Eastern League but also competed in New York-Penn, Northeast, Northern, and Can-Am Leagues.
Today, they’re members of Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The field also hosted athletes from nearby Elmira Southside High School and Elmira College.
In addition, Dunn Field was the venue for boxing and wrestling matches and music concerts.
