Nestled against Interstate 95, the stadium was dubbed
Judy Johnson Field at Legends stadium when it opened. It was renamed,
a year later, for Wilmington Mayor, Daniel S. Frawley, who championed
the first of the latest wave of Carolina League stadiums. The field
was named in honor of Hall of Famer William Julius "Judy"
Johnson. The Wilmington-native played in the Negro leagues from
1921 to 1935. The stadium is one of the anchors for Riverfront Wilmington,
a commercial and entertainment complex built on the site of a World
War II shipyard.
