Former Notable Players: Bob Boone, Julio Franco, Greg Luzinski, Ryne Sandberg, Mike Schmidt, Scott Rolen, and Jimmy Rollins Notes: Originally opened as Reading Memorial Municipal Stadium, in honor of the World War II veterans. The naming rights were sold to GPU, an energy utility services company in 2000. For the 2002 season, the stadium was rebranded FirstEnergy Stadium, following the acquisition of GPU by FirstEnergy. This Eastern League ballpark has many of the amenities found in its Major League brethren -- like a hot tub, a video scoreboard, and a private open air bar. Renovations over the past dozen seasons have allowed the facility to keep pace with the newer state of the art stadiums. A pennant with the number 24 flies from the top of the grandstand, signifying the retired jersey of Mike Schmidt from his days as an R-Phil. |
