Former Notable Players: Derek Jeter, Mike Lowell, Don Mattingly, Andy Pettitte, Willie Stargell and Enos Slaughter. Notes: Built by the St. Louis Cardinals from the same plans as Rochester, New York's Red Wing Stadium, Red Bird Stadium had a price tag of $ 450,000. In 1955 when a locally owned team set up shop it was dubbed Jet Stadium. After laying fallow for much of the 1970's, Franklin County purchased the facility and undertook a multi-million dollar renovation reopening the ball park as Franklin County Stadium in 1977. It was renamed Cooper Stadium in 1984 honoring Harold Cooper, a local business and civic leader, who had spearheaded efforts to keep baseball in Ohio's capital. In 2009 the Clippers moved across the river to a new stadium, Huntington Park, in the downtown Arena District. |
